Preparing and empowering students, families, and target neighborhoods.
On April 10, 2019, Afternoon Adventure Learning Center was established as a
501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization.
The mission is to help improve the lives and education of at-risk students in grades
K-12 who live in low-income areas, while supporting and providing resources to their
families. The center promotes academic enrichment, health and wellness, financial
literacy, job readiness, and social engagement.
Afternoon Adventure is preparing and empowering target neighborhoods for leadership in
their communities and success in their personal lives.
The center is centrally located at
306 North Main Street in Downtown Newton, a
family-friendly area close to Newton Elementary School, Newton High School, and the Newton
Public Library. Newton Elementary is about a 5-minute drive away, Newton High is about a
7-minute drive away, and the library is about a 3-minute drive away. Bus transportation
is available for students attending Newton Municipal School District schools. Families of
students attending other schools are responsible for arranging transportation.
Leadership
Kristie Temple, Executive Director
Kristie Temple graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in Accounting in
2003 and has held a Certified Mississippi Teacher license since 2008. She has worked in the
public school system for over 15 years, teaching English, Math, and Special Education.
Kristie's interest in afterschool programs began when her own son attended afterschool and
needed that one-on-one, small group learning environment. She is passionate about creating
enriching and supportive learning experiences for all children.
Her favorite thing about what she does is developing relationships with the children that
she teaches and their families. She believes that small class sizes and the development of a
strong community allow her and her team to really know each child as an individual and to
provide a solid and supportive foundation in the early years.
All teachers are CPR certified, have undergone a background check, received health and safety
training, and hold a degree in Elementary Education, either an AA or BS, and/or hold a
Mississippi Certified Teacher's license.
Five major components built for students and families.
Afternoon Adventure Learning Center's program was developed to teach high-risk,
inner-city youth in grades K-12 and families the skills to become successful in life.
